5 Ways to Deal with Motion Sickness

Does motion sickness end up running the entire trip? You’re not alone. Research suggests that at least 1 out of every 3 people are likely to get motion sick.

Here are some ways you can deal with motion sickness:

Be In Control of the Moment

Motion sickness can happen to you even when you’re in the car. In this situation, taking the steering wheel is a good option. This way, you’ll be in control of the direction and speed of the car, giving you an idea of what to anticipate, and your focus on the driving will help relax the other senses.

If you’re unable to drive the car, then open a window or try to engage in a conversation. These methods will help distract you from the movement.

2. Reconsider Your Diet

It could be that you’ve overstuffed yourself with food before you started travelling and the undigested food is making the motion sickness worse. Fatty and heavy food makes it especially difficult for the body to digest.

Try to avoid the breakfast buffet before travelling in the morning, and instead, have a healthy and light breakfast consisting mostly of fruits. Don’t drink too much water either.

3. Focus On a Stable Object

Distraction helps with motion sickness. Move to a position where you’re stable and your view is fixated on a particular object, and focus on it for the rest of the trip. Resting your head while travelling may help too. This gives your brain a new perspective to focus on and avoid all the commotion.

4. Don’t Consume Content

Watching movies or reading books while travelling can make your motion sickness worse, because your eyes are focusing on a still object while the inner ears detect motion. This disconnect is likely to increase your motion sickness.

Focusing on something up close can make it even worse. It’s better to focus on audio only (music, podcasts, audiobooks), or sleep for a bit.
