Causes of Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)

Pink eye is common in young kids as it is generally infectious, and breakouts can spread through playgrounds and schools. But that does not mean adults are safe from it. The communicable kind of pink eye can be caused by viruses and bacteria, the ones responsible for infections like colds, sore throats, sinus infections, and ear infections. However, sometimes the cause of pink eye can be the same bacteria that causes sexually transmitted diseases, like Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.

There are also non-infectious kinds of pink eye caused by various other reasons, for instance:

.
  • Irritant pink eye is caused by things like pollution, air, dust, and chlorine in the pool as they irritate the eye.
  • Allergic pink eye is caused by allergic conditions such as hay fever. It can also be set off by dust mites, animal dander, pollen, and grass.

Symptoms and Signs of Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)

The signs of pinkeye mostly depend on what caused the inflammation, but common symptoms include:

  • Redness of the inner eyelid or sclera (The white part of the eye)
  • More tears
  • Swollen conjunctiva
  • Blurred vision
  • Itching or burning eyes
  • white or green discharge from the eyes
  • Swollen lymph nodes

You do not need to have conjunctivitis if your eyes show any of the above-mentioned symptoms. However, if you have one or more of these signs, consult your family doctor or any general practitioner.
