How to Deal with Anxiety & Depression in Quarantine

A person counting down the days of quarantine.

Over 40% of adults over the age of 40 have had negative effects on their mental health due to COVID-19. Even if people did not lose a loved one, the idea that you could at any moment, or begin cooped up inside the house for months is enough to make anyone feel unhappy with life.

Given that the pandemic will last for at least one more year, these are some ways to deal with it in the meantime, especially if you’re required to stay under quarantine:

1. Accept the Reality

One of the biggest causes of depression is trying to hide your own feeling from yourself, or acting like everything is fine when it isn’t. If you just accept that you’re in an abnormal situation and that it is ok to be sad about it, then you’re preparing yourself for the rest of the time you’ll spend in isolation.

It’ll also help you to start preparing for the situation accordingly.

2. Take On A Project You’ve Been Meaning To Do

While it might seem a little too optimistic, the fact is that during quarantine, you’re going to have a couple of weeks to yourself without any responsibilities. Provided that you’re feeling fine, you can take up a hobby or project that you always wanted to do.

For some, it can be learning a new skill online, for others it can mean finally writing that journal you’ve been meaning to. Treating the mandatory quarantine period as a vacation can help take the pressure off.

3. It’s OK To Entertain Yourself

The internet might be filled with inspirational quotes about using this time to better yourself, but research indicated that most people are using it to binge movies and series on Netflix.

You can also use this time to cross movies and TV series on your list. It might not seem as aspirational as other options, but it’s a good way to keep yourself entertained and improve your mood while passing time quickly. When else are you going to get 2 weeks to yourself with nothing to do?

4. Get a Virtual Doctor Consultation
