Prevent Pink Eye from Spreading With These Tips

A man with pink eye

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, affects over 6 million people in the US every year. It causes swelling, redness, and itching.

While pink eye isn't a serious health condition, it can be quite painful and might require antibiotic medication in order to treat it.

One of the bigger issues with pink eye is how quickly it spreads. Here's how you can contain a pink eye infection if you or someone in your family has it:

1. Wash Your Hands Regularly

It is essential that you wash your hands after touching your eyes because you may touch another surface and spread the infection through there.

You should also wash your hands immediately after applying your eye medication. The CDC recommends that you should use soap and warm water. If you have neither available, then use hand sanitizer.

2. Don't Go Swimming

While public pools are closed these days, you should avoid using any other pool you have access to, be it at your house, or at a hotel where you're staying.

The infection could spread through the water, and your eye's condition could get worse as well.

3. Wash Everything You Use

Once your pink eye has cleared up, it is important that you either wash or dispose of anything you came into contact with while you were infected.

Any towels or sheets that you had been using might still have contagions that could spread the infection. The washcloth you'd been using to clean your eye should, in particular, either be washed or disposed of immediately.

4. Don't Share Anything

Any make-up tools you use regularly can cause the infection to spread again. So make sure that if you have to use make-up, don't use any of your favorite/most expensive kits.

Additionally, you shouldn't be sharing make-up or eyewear with anyone. Someone who uses your make-up or glasses might get infected.

5. Keep Both Eyes Separated

If you have the infection in just one eye, then make sure that the other one doesn't catch it. The ways to ensure that are:

  • Don't rub both eyes with the same hand
  • Don't use the same eye drop bottle for both eyes
  • If you have to use eye lenses, store the lens for each eye separately
