Types of Anxiety Medications: Uses and Side Effects

If you have anxiety, you're not alone. According to the NAMI, approximately 19.1% of adults in the United States have an anxiety disorder. While there are several types of anxiety disorders, they all share one common symptom: feelings of fear or dread that interfere with day-to-day life.

Anxiety medications can be a godsend for people with chronic anxiety or panic attacks. These medications can make it easier to manage day-to-day stressors, which is why doctors prescribe them.

However, it's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for anxiety, and its medication comes with a host of potential side effects.

In this blog post, we'll explore the different types of anxiety medications, their uses, and their side effects.

1.Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIS)

These are most commonly prescribed as anxiety medication. They work by increasing levels of serotonin, a mood-boosting chemical in our brains.

Common SSRIs include  Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine), and Prozac (fluoxetine). SSRIs usually take 4-6 weeks before they start working and may cause side effects such as nausea, sexual dysfunction, and headaches.

2.Serotonin And Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIS)

SNRIs work similarly to SSRIs but also increase levels of norepinephrine, another chemical in our brain that helps improve mood. They're often used to treat depression but can also be effective for treating anxiety.

Common SNRIs include Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Levomilnacipran (Fetzima). These medications usually take 2-4 weeks to start working and may cause side effects such as dry mouth, insomnia, sweating, and dizziness.

3. Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are fast-acting anti-anxiety medications that can provide relief within hours. They work by depressing the central nervous system and should only be used short-term due to the risk of dependence and abuse.

Common benzodiazepines include Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), and Ativan (lorazepam). These drugs can cause drowsiness, confusion, and memory problems.

4. Beta-Blockers

Beta-blockersare a type of medication typically used to treat heart conditions but can also be effective for reducing anxiety symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, shaking, and sweating.

Because they work by blocking adrenaline receptors in the body, they are not typically used as the first line of treatment for anxiety. Still, they may be prescribed if other anxiety medications haven't worked or you have performance anxiety.

Common beta-blockers include Inderal (Propranolol). Its side effects may include fatigue, cold hands, and dizziness.
